I mostly use disposable diapers. I have used cloth diapers occasionally in the past, but I find disposable much easier than the cloth diapers. Whether to use disposable or cloth is really a personal choice. Here is the checklist to get diaper ready.
1. Diapers: Cloth diapers of appropriate size or disposable diapers of size nb (newborn) with wetness indicator plus some size 1 diapers just in case. The size will change as your baby will grow. I have used nb diapers for the first 3 weeks and then started using size 1 until my baby became 2 and half months old.
2. Wipes. I always use fragrance free, but its a personal choice.
3. Wipes warmer. Very useful especially in the first months.
4. Diaper rash cream. I recommend A+D cream.
5. Cotton swabs to apply creme.
6. Waterproof changing mats/ pads. This will make changing diapers easy anywhere. Just place a mat under your baby and you are good to go; you won’t need a special changing table.
7. A diaper pail that locks the smell of soiled diapers.
8. Pail bags. Most of these diaper pails use a special pail bag, which is expensive. I started using my diaper pail for only soiled diapers and the regular trash can for all the urine wet diapers. This drastically reduced my pail bag expenses. If you are worried about odor of urine, then just place a box of baking soda inside the trash can to absorb the odor. Honestly, I have had no problem of the odor so far, I change my trash bags every other day and the baking soda every month.
9. A laundry basket if using cloth diapers.
10. A diaper caddy. This handy caddy will help you for a quick diaper change anytime anywhere in the house, especially if you have a 2 or 3 floor house. There is a lot you can carry in the caddy, but the essentials are:
1. Diapers.
2. A small wipe case
3. Diaper changing mat
4. Diaper rash cream
5. Swabs to apply cream
6. Burp cloth
7. Bibs
8. Baby first aid kit
9. Baby moisturizer
10. Toys/Teether/Pacifier
11. Other essentials of your choice.
Due to their delicate skin, newborns are more susceptible to diaper rashes. One way to avoid diaper rash is to change diapers of your newborn at almost every feed at least in the first two months.
